The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
